Basic Audiology/Hearing Evaluations

The audiologist may use several tests to find which tones, sounds and words you can/cannot hear.  These tests are administered in a sound treated room with electronic equipment.

Newborn/Infant Hearing Screening and Evaluation

Infants can be reliably screened for hearing loss at 24 hours old.  In Delaware, all infants are screened in the nursery prior to discharge from the hospital.  However, some infants fail or do not cooperate for this exam. Otoacoustic emissions are used to screen and evaluate their hearing. Otoacoustic emissions test the hair cells in the inner ear and will detect if the infant has a moderate to profound hearing loss in most cases.

Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)

An ABR is a test used to detect lesions or growths of the auditory nerve.  This test is not invasive and does not require fasting.  An ABR is ordered for one or more of the following conditions:

Unilateral hearing loss or a significant difference in hearing between ears.
Unilateral tinnitus (ringing/buzzing) in one ear.
               Sudden or fluctuating hearing loss.
Abnormal results upon audiometric or hearing examination.

Videonystagmography (VNG)

VNG evaluates the balance system of the inner ear.  It helps your doctor to determine whether the cause of your dizziness is related to your central nervous system or your inner ear. The test is performed by an audiologist using infrared goggles to measure your eye movements.  At a certain point during the test, cool and warm air will be directed into the ear.  This procedure is not invasive and is painless.  There is preparation for the test, including fasting.

Hearing Aid Evaluations/Fittings/Repairs/Batteries

Our audiologists are licensed hearing aid dispensers in the State of Delaware.  They are qualified to evaluate and recommend various methods of amplification for those with a hearing loss. The audiologists will help you determine which instrument is right for you.  They also are trained to make adjustments and/or repairs in the office.  We also stock hearing aid batteries and offer a convenient battery club option.

Custom Earplugs

Custom earplugs are made for swimming and noise protection.  These plugs can be made of hypoallergenic material and are designed for comfort.  Noise plugs can be made for specific purposes such as hunting or industrial noise protection.  Please call the office to discuss your options.
